I came to work as a Project Planner at the Department of Transportation in 2005. That was after getting my Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Delaware. Now, getting a Master's Degree while raising 4 children and having a part time job wasn't easy. I hit several walls and came close to giving up. Nevertheless, I graduated after 2 years and landed a job that I love. Looking back now, the hardships were all worth it.
As my job title suggests, I plan projects. I go to communities and talk to people about what they want to improve their surroundings. I help them prioritize their wish list to make their projects feasible specially if the budget is limited. I help them find sources of funding too.
Mostly, I plan streetscape improvement projects, downtown revitalization, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, nature trails, historic preservation and several other exciting things. I help communities turn their vision into reality.
I also manage the Scenic Byways Program. It is a program that aims to identify, promote, preserve and enhance roadways with outstanding visual qualities. Isn't it good that I get paid to see all those lovely places?
